Principle of Flow Velocity/Flow Measurement by Pitot Tube
When a pitot tube is placed in a fluid flow, the flow is blocked in front of it and flows backward, but there is a point at the tip where the flow velocity becomes zero. The pressure at that point is called the total pressure (Pt) and is detected by the hole at the tip. The pitot tube also has a hole on the side, which detects the pressure of the fluid (static pressure Pt). A pitot tube detects total pressure (Pt) and static pressure (Ps), and from the difference between the two (dynamic pressure or differential pressure Pd), the flow velocity and flow rate are determined by Bernoulli's Equation. |
Bernoulli's principle
This states that, in a steady flow, the sum of all forms of energy in a fluid is the same at all points that are free of viscous forces. This requires that the sum of kinetic energy, potential energy and internal energy remains constant.
Method of flow velocity and flow rate measurement using a pitot tube
Pitot tubes determine the flow velocity and flow rate by detecting differential pressure (dynamic pressure), so they are used in combination with measuring instruments such as differential pressure gauges.
